The earliest inhabitants of the land were the Jororo Indians and the Mayaca. By 1760 widespread diseases like Malaria and constant warfare with the Spanish decimated their numbers almost to the point of extinction. Later in 1821 although the US won the ownership of this place from the Spanish but the subsequent Seminole wars made it impossible for people to settle here. After the end of the Seminole wars, a wall of defenses was built around this area by General Zachary Taylor and the town was named Mellonville. Later in 1887 when Sanford city was formed by a group of Swedes merchants, the town of Mellonville was absorbed in it. After the First World War and the Second World War, the city of Stanford came into limelight and the first true settlers started arriving here.
