Miami Beach is an island city in Florida which falls under the Miami-Dade County. The cornerstone of the city was laid in the year 1915. Together with Downtown Miami, South Beach and the Port of Miami, Miami Beach forms the backbone of the commercial center of South Florida.
The city is spread across an area of 15.22 square miles out of which 7.68 square miles and water comprises of 7.53 square miles. The city is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Biscayne Beach on the other.
The population of Miami Beach was registered at 87779 in the year of 2010 and currently stands at 92307 as of 2018.
All the land of the city was originally purchased by Henry Lum in the year 1870. In 1876 the first Biscayne House of Refuge was the first building to be built in this otherwise uninhabited island by the US government. In subsequent decades coconut plantation and crop plantation flourished here. After the establishment of Miami city and the incoming of railroad and port area Miami city started to flourish. By 1912 large scale construction started here Miami Beach Improvement Company was established to clear the land and make it habitable. The town was chartered in 1915 which later became a city in 1917. After the Second World War immigrants from other cities of Florida started to come here so as to look for livelihood, hence land prices soared and further strengthened the economy. Currently Miami Beach ranks at the fourth position in the whole of United States in terms of expensive home sales.
Tourism is the main source of income for majority of the residents of the city; hence lot of effort is spent by the government in renovating and creating new tourist attractions in the city. Close proximity to Miami and access to both the Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bay is the main reason behind a booming tourism industry.
